Eli – Border collie/Samoyed mix

Eli was adopted by his current family when he was three months old.  Over time his family discovered that Eli had some congenital neurological issues.  Eli is partially seeing impaired and struggles with depth perception.  He had to be taught to walk down a hill and he has developed a number of compensatory behaviors such as walking in circles (instead of a straight line) and prefers to have his left side against a wall as he walks. Eli is a very smart dog and was easily trained to not leave the yard or step on the hardwood flooring in the formal part of the house. When Eli shows off, he runs as fast as he can in really tight circles, always circling too his left, until he is borderline exhausted!  Because of his vision, Eli has poor balance and he does not jump up or climb stairs but he constantly lifts his right paw. Eli enjoys his toys and has a basketful.  Whenever his family returns home, Eli runs to his basket to pick out a toy. By the end of an evening there will be five or six toys spread out in the family room.  Eli loves to go for walks but would prefer to be on a leash, as it helps him with direction and makes him feel more secure.  He also enjoys sleeping in a small enclosed space; Eli has his bed in the pantry and whenever he is tired or is overwhelmed when there are too many people in the house, he noses the pantry door open and goes in to sleep.  However, what Eli loves most is people and there is nothing he enjoys more than leaning up against a person to be pet!  Eli is a "conversational" dog.  He talks constantly, but it is more of a "whoo whoo whoo" sound then a typical bark.  Eli's home away from home is Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital; one of the things he likes best about going there is that he has so many different people with whom to talk and socialize! He is an entertaining and quirky but loving dog!
