Dr. Harrison Monk grew up in Darien, Connecticut, earned his B.S. degree in biology at Colby College in Maine in 1966, and was awarded his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. A resident of Anne Arundel County since graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Monk is a co-founder and partner of Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital, which was built in 1974. Keenly interested in all aspects of veterinary medicine, surgery and administration, Dr. Monk loves being "a true general practitioner".

The first president of the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Monk enjoys continuing education and goes to as many meetings as possible. He currently belongs to the Maryland and American Veterinary Medical Associations, as well as the American Animal Hospital Association and the Greater Baltimore Veterinary Medical Association. He has been the veterinary advisor to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County and a member of the Anne Arundel County Animal Control Board.

Dr. Monk is married to his college sweetheart, Linda, and is an active resident of Sherwood Forest, where he and Linda raised two children. When time away from GAVH permits, he enjoys skiing, boating, crabbing, making local maple syrup, and tending his dozen or so beehives.
   
 
   

   
Dr. David Hickes was born and grew up in central Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from Penn State in 1966 and his degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. He is a co-founder of Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital and has practiced there since the hospital was built in 1974. Dr. Hickes and his wife and family have lived in the Annapolis area since 1973.

Dr. Hickes recently began working half time, providing him with the opportunity to devote more time to his family, as well as to traveling, fishing, playing cribbage and attending local and national continuing education meetings and seminars. He is a member of and past president of the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association. . He is also a member of the Maryland and American Veterinary Medical Associations, as well as the American Animal Hospital Association and the Greater Baltimore Veterinary Medical Association.
   
 
   

   
Dr. W. Chase Coale III, a long time resident of Anne Arundel County, worked at Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital during summers, even before graduating from the University of Maryland in 1978. He then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 1981 and came back to GAVH full time. As a partner now in GAVH, Inc., he plays a management roll as well as demonstrating continued expertise practicing veterinary medicine. After 23 years of general medicine, Dr. Coale has now limited his practice to surgery. As Director of Surgical Services here at GAVH, he devotes his clinical time in the pursuit of surgical-based problems—general, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery; lameness evaluations; surgical oncology; and trauma, plastic, and reconstructive surgery.

With a wife and two daughters to vie for his attention, he is past president and a current office holder in the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association. He enjoys sailing, skiing and scuba diving. As with all GAVH doctors, continuing education is a priority. Dr. Coale is a member, past and current office holder of numerous local, state and national veterinary medical organizations.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Duane Woodburn was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He obtained his B.S. degree in Animal Science from the University of Maryland at College Park. In 1980, he was awarded a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia, where, as a senior student, he received the Merck Veterinary Award for proficiency in small animal medicine. Dr. Woodburn has been a resident of Anne Arundel County since 1980 and became a partner at Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital in 1984. He enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, particularly internal medicine. He is a two-term past president of the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association, a former chairman of the Anne Arundel County Animal Control Commission, and a former chair of the Indian Creek School Board of Trustees.

Dr. Woodburn is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, Anne Arundel County Veterinay Medical Association, Association of Avian Veterinarians and the Mid Atlantic States Association of Avian Veterinarians. He, his wife Norma (who is also a veterinarian at GAVH) and their two children live in Anne Arundel County and enjoy many activities including boating, fishing, skiing, and baseball.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Norma Woodburn was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Anne Arundel County. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. Dr. Woodburn joined the staff of GAVH in 1985 after the birth of her first child. She enjoys the flexibility of working part time while raising her two sons. She has been able to be an active volunteer at her children's school and also served as a Den Leader in their Cub Scout Packs.

While Dr. Woodburn enjoys all areas of veterinary practice, she has a special interest in feline medicine. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Greater Baltimore Veterinary Medical Association, and the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association. When she is not working or carpooling, she enjoys family outings, reading, quilting and antiquing.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Eileen Manyin earned her undergraduate degree in biology/pre-med in 1986 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. After a year of pharmacology research at Cornell University, she entered the Cornell Veterinary School and attained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. She completed externships in avian and zoo medicine at the San Francisco Zoo, and aquatic medicine at Woodshole, Massachusetts.

Dr. Manyin has been practicing at GAVH since 1992 and shifted to a part time schedule since the birth of her children. She especially enjoys working with exotic patients, such as birds, reptiles and pocket pets. Dr. Manyin also has a lot of experience with wildlife medicine. She is the consulting vet for the Terrapin Connection program, which is offered as a part of the Anne Arundel County Public School/Arlington Echo's Chesapeake Connections program. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and the Association of Avian Veterinarians. Her husband, Mike, works as a graphics programmer at NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Manyin, her family, and her four cats enjoy living in Annapolis, especially summertime at the community beach.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Elizabeth Daher was born in Detroit, Michigan, but only spent the first few years of her life in the Motor City. Growing up in a military family, she moved quite often until residing in Frederick, Maryland 20 years ago.

Completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design in 1989, Dr. Daher worked as an Interior Designer in the Washington, D.C. area. Realizing that veterinary medicine was her lifelong dream, she returned to school and graduated from Kansas State University with her DVM degree in 2001. Although she enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, she has a particular interest in ophthalmology.

When Dr. Daher is not practicing veterinary medicine at GAVH, she enjoys outdoor activities such as rollerblading and biking as well as cooking, traveling and spending time with her personal zoo.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Gerity was born in Summit, NJ. Dr. Gerity went to Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA and earned a B.S. in Animal Science. During the summers she often participated in summer internships at a variety of pharmaceutical companies such as Merck and Co., Inc, Johnson and Johnson and UpJohn Pharmaceutical. She then went on to earn her DVM degree from Michigan State University. She graduated in 1996 and landed a job in Allenwood, NJ where she practiced for a year and a half. She married Greg a year after graduation and moved with him and his new job at W.R. Grace to Glen Burnie, MD. She found a position at another veterinary hospital in Maryland but 6 months after starting her employment had to go on maternity leave. It was suggested by another Maryland veterinarian that she apply to GAVH after first daughter was born. Currently, she lives in Ellicott City, MD with her husband, 3 girls (Anna, Rachel and Melanie), her 4 cats (Hamlet, Maggie, Ophelia (a special needs deaf cat) and Othello) and her pointer dog Monte. Dr. Gerity is employed part-time. Her interests include orthopedics, reading, gardening, teaching Sunday school, helping at her daughters? school and exercising when she finds the time.
   
 
   

   

Dr. Alison Edge grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ, and Chatham, MA. She earned her bachelor's degree in Physics at Connecticut College in 1995, and then went on to pursue a Masters degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Virginia. It was during her time at UVa that she adopted her first dog Jefferson, began volunteering at a small animal hospital as well as an equine hospital, and ultimately decided that her true calling was veterinary medicine. She earned her DVM degree from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in 2003. During her senior year, Dr. Edge was inducted into the national veterinary honor society, Phi Zeta, and was honored with several awards including the American Animal Hospital Association senior student award for excellence in small animal medicine and surgery.

Dr. Edge was introduced to GAVH during a 4-week clerkship here her senior year. Shortly after graduation, Dr.Edge joined the staff of GAVH full time. She loves living and working in Annapolis, and feels very fortunate to have developed so many wonderful relationships with her clients and patients over the years. Dr.Edge sees exotic mammals in addition to dogs and cats. She also has a special interest in ultrasound, and has earned certification in advanced abdominal ultrasonography through continuing education.

Since the birth of her daughter in 2007, Dr. Edge has switched to a part-time schedule. She currently resides in Annapolis with her husband, also a veterinarian, as well as their daughter, three cats, and two dogs. Outside of the office, she enjoys traveling, hiking, reading, sailing, and the occasional round of golf.

   
 
   

   
Dr. Kelly Anderson grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She received her Bachelor's degree in biology from UMBC in 1997. After working as a veterinary technician and research assistant for two years, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in 2003. She was inducted into the National Veterinary Honor Society, Phi Zeta, in her senior year. She was also the recipient of several scholarships throughout the years of veterinary school. After veterinary school, she devoted a year to an internship at Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic. She now joins the staff of GAVH.

Dr. Anderson currently resides in Millersville with her two cats, Mason and Oliver. She enjoys traveling, scuba diving, biking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Sarah Balcom grew up in upstate NY in a family of animal lovers. Her family moved to Virginia Beach, VA just before her final year of high school. A year later she enrolled at the College of William and Mary, earning a bachelor of arts in Anthropology and Music with a minor concentration in French. It was during her senior year as an undergraduate that she started on the path to becoming a veterinarian. As part of the requirements for a concentration in anthropology, she had to conduct field research and a write a thesis about a topic of her choice. When asked by her advisor what types of settings might interest her, her immediate thought was to study the relationship between people and animals. She spent a year volunteering at the Heritage Humane Society in Williamsburg, VA during which time she worked in all parts of the shelter. It was during that year that she realized how much she enjoyed working with animals and on their behalf. She stayed in the Tidewater area to gain additional animal experience at local veterinary practices and the Virginia Zoo while taking the pre-requisite science classes for veterinary school. She then went to Tufts University in Massachusetts where she earned a MS in Animals and Public Policy and then her DVM. As a veterinary student, she volunteered for 2 weeks in Louisiana after hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Awed by her experience, she became active in the state?s animal response team (SMART). During veterinary school, Dr. Balcom was awarded the Tufts Foster Scholarship, named an honorable mention for the Association of Women Veterinarians national scholarship, and inducted into the National Veterinary Honor Society (Phi Zeta). She was also active in many campus groups from the student AVMA to playing the clarinet in an on-campus woodwind ensemble. After graduating, she practiced in Massachusetts for a short while before deciding to move closer to her family and away from the long, cold winters of the northeast.

Dr. Balcom continues to work in disaster planning for animals and is also interested in shelter medicine. Her clinical interests in animal behavior, pain management and nutrition in addition to general wellness care. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Balcom enjoys singing (you may hear her performing in the area), ballroom dancing, gardening, canoeing, cooking, cake decorating, traveling and visiting her friends and family in the area. She currently lives in Annapolis with her three very adorable kitties.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Katie Sabella was born in Washington, DC and grew up in northern Virginia. She earned a bachelors degree in English literature from the University of Virginia in 1998. Dr. Sabella taught elementary school and coached field hockey and lacrosse for several years before deciding to pursue veterinary medicine. After moving cross country to Colorado, Dr. Sabella went back to school and earned a second bachelors degree in Biology from the Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2003. From there, she went on to veterinary medical school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and earned her doctorate in 2007.

Dr. Sabella completed an internship in small animal emergency medicine and critical care at Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic and joined the GAVH team in the summer of 2008. Her interests include emergency medicine, soft tissue surgery, cardiology, and animal welfare.

In her spare time, Dr. Sabella enjoys relaxing with family and friends, working on her house, going to the beach, reading, and traveling. She shares her home in Eastport with her husband and three large-ish dogs, Pepper, Mac, and Jasper.
   
 
   

   
Dr. Paulette Salmon grew up in Arlington, VA. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, in 1995. After a stint in wildlife rehabilitation in Naples, FL and one in whale research in Gloucester, MA, she went to the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY, and earned a Master’s of Science in wildlife biology. She then moved cross-country and worked for the state and for private consulting companies as a wildlife biologist in Denver, CO. Realizing that writing papers was not for her, Dr. Salmon started moonlighting at a veterinary emergency clinic and applied to vet school. She earned her DVM from Michigan State University and then moved back to the mid-Atlantic to be closer to friends and family. She joined GAVH the summer of 2008. Her clinical interests include oncology, surgery, and behavior.

Dr. Salmon enjoys spending her time off with her high-energy mutt, Sadie, exploring the countryside at high speeds. When time allows, she loves to travel to faraway places, go scuba diving, hike, canoe, camp, and bike.
